It depends on the level — here's the answer for each league.
A typical baseball game lasts between 1 and 3 hours, depending on the number of innings and the level of play. There's no clock — the game lasts until all the innings are complete and a winner is decided.
9 innings. After the 2023 pitch clock, the average dropped from ~3:05 to ~2:40.
The Norwegian Eliteserien often plays 7 innings in the regular season. Playoffs can run longer.
6 innings. Kept short to fit the attention span of kids ages 6–12.
Baseball is one of the few major team sports without a countdown clock. A game doesn't end because time runs out — it ends when both teams have batted their full innings and a winner is decided.
That means a baseball game could, in theory, last forever. The longest professional game in history (Triple-A, between the Pawtucket Red Sox and Rochester Red Wings in 1981) lasted 33 innings and 8 hours and 25 minutes — played across two days because it was paused in the morning.
In practice, most games wrap up within a reasonable time. The rules have tightened over the past decade — a pitch clock, fewer warnings, and faster changeovers — to keep game length under control.
If the game is tied after the last regular inning, extra innings are played until a winner is found. In MLB, extra innings now start with a runner on second base to reduce the risk of marathon games — a rule introduced in 2020. In the Norwegian Eliteserien, extra innings are usually played traditionally, without this rule.
